Distracted Scrolling

Why Do We Do It?

Emma O’Brien, First Year, Communication Sciences and Disorders

How often is it that you’re on social media scrolling out of habit? In today’s generation, scrolling is a second nature for the majority of students. Even though it has proved no purpose, we continue to let it hold such a large part of our lives. Social media is used to fill time in our day when we have nothing better to do. We use this platform so often, but how closely do we pay attention to what we’re looking at? Do we see and understand what is going on in the pictures and videos we encounter every day through social media? Distracted Scrolling: Why Do We Do It? gives people the interactive experience scrolling through Instagram and not fully looking at all of the details in the picture. Is your avocado toast really avocado? We may never know why we waste our time on social media, not looking and enjoying what may be on our feed, but we can try.

Personal statement:

“I feel that my generation relies on social media far too much without realizing what we are even looking at. The monotony of scrolling is a bigger issue than anyone had thought, and my project displays the same monotony and process we go through while on social media.”
