Self-Censored

Jessica Essert, Second Year, Film and Media Studies

The prevalence of editing apps in our social culture begs us to ask ourselves, are we hiding our true selves from the world? Are we being censored by beauty standards of our culture? Are we censoring ourselves to portray a person we can never truly be? Not only do we censor how we look but how we feel. We want to become the ultimate Instagram model. Self-Censored challenges each and every one of us to consider looking below the surface by using images edited with the same software used by many Instagram influencers. They are displayed side by side with their original image and all their imperfections, showing our true selves and our true thoughts. Asking us not to accept a feed full of posts to show us the inner workings of those around us. We accept fake perfection because it is easier than accepting a rougher and more flawed reality. It’s time to look at the crack in the mirror, and realize we are all being censored. Sometimes even Self-Censored.

Personal Statement

“I know that what I put out there is manufactured by me, and I don’t think other people realize it. It’s simple to hide who you really are on social media, therefore everyone does it. I want to make people think about how much they tell the truth when they hit the post button.”
